You Are Pushing the Right Buttons
A founder note on what has changed in Quenta, and the conversation that reminded me why we are building it.
By Sarah Songalia, CPA · Founder, Quenta

It has been a while since I shared what has been happening with Quenta.
We have been busy. Busy making Quenta better, but more importantly, continuing to build it into what I have always wanted it to become: the Financial Command Center for Philippine businesses.
And quite a lot has changed.
Payroll, rebuilt around the run
Quenta Payroll and Operations has evolved into a much more robust payroll system, largely because of the requests we have been receiving from clients.
We have streamlined the payroll run into six easy steps, with a wizard guiding the user through the process from beginning to end.
That may sound simple, but that was exactly the point. Payroll can become unnecessarily complicated very quickly. We wanted the system to carry the complexity in the background while giving the user a clear path to follow.
Inventory that knows your branches
Our Inventory Management module has also grown.
One of the newer developments is a branch-aware procurement process, which becomes particularly useful for businesses operating across several locations.
And we are now applying Quenta's OCR document intelligence to supplier documents as well. That means documents coming into the business can become part of a more connected process instead of simply becoming another attachment someone still has to manually encode.
A compliance pack for PEZA and BOI registered companies
We have also built a new tax and compliance pack for PEZA and BOI registered companies, covering reportorial requirements that these companies need to prepare as part of their compliance with regulatory authorities.
A tax computation you can trace
And then there is our Tax Center.
This has become one of the areas I am most excited about, because it is doing much more than simply producing a tax form.
Quenta follows the tax components of a transaction from the moment it is recorded and carries those components into the Tax Center. From there, the system computes the tax payable for you. All you have to do is review the computation and copy the numbers into the appropriate return.
But more importantly, the numbers are verifiable.
If you click on an amount in the computation, Quenta can take you back to the ledger and to the source documents supporting the number being claimed. So when the system tells you that a particular amount forms part of your tax computation, you are not simply expected to trust a number on a screen.
You can trace it. You can verify it. You can see where it came from.
That matters enormously in accounting and tax.
Another very practical problem happens during filing time. We may already know that creditable withholding tax was deducted from our collections, but the corresponding certificates are not yet with us. So we have placed monitoring for creditable withholding taxes inside the Tax Center as well. This allows users to see which withholding tax credits are already supported and which ones still need to be followed up.
And yes, the BIR tax deadlines are there too. The deadlines are monitored in the Tax Center and also appear on the dashboard. Again, it sounds simple, but compliance becomes much easier when the system is helping remind you before the deadline becomes urgent.
One particular feature our clients have also been raving about is the automatic preparation of BIR Form 2307. You no longer have to prepare each 2307 separately. Quenta creates it based on the transactions already recorded in the system. You simply review it and issue it, either by printing it or sending it by email.
That streamlines a process accounting teams repeat over and over again. And that is exactly the kind of work I want Quenta to take away.
Not the judgment. Not the accounting. The repetitive work around it.
Books of accounts, ready to print
We have also continued to strengthen Business Insights.
One of the newer additions is a dedicated module for your books of accounts, already prepared for export or printing.
Some companies are still writing their books by hand. For them, this is the way out of that, and it is also what they will need the day they decide to register for loose-leaf books of accounts.
For companies already on loose-leaf, the difference is felt at printing time. The records are already organized, so there is nothing to compile. You export, and the books are there.
Again, the goal is not simply to digitize an old process. The goal is to make the process cleaner, easier, and more useful.
The improvement I did not expect to love
And sometimes, making Quenta better does not mean adding another major module.
One of the improvements I am surprisingly excited about is something much simpler. Quenta now has a search bar.
It may seem like a small improvement, but as the platform grows, I think it becomes increasingly important. A new user should not have to already know where everything is before the system becomes useful. If you know what you want to do, you should be able to search for it.
Need to run payroll? Search for it. Looking for a tax report? Search for it. Trying to find a particular function or process? Search for it.
The search helps users find what they are looking for and gives them guidance toward what they want to accomplish. That matters especially for someone opening Quenta for the first time.
Because a system can have all the features in the world, but if the user cannot easily find the one they need, then we have not really made their work easier.
That little search bar is part of a much bigger goal for Quenta: make a powerful financial system feel simple to use.
Why I am still the one in the room
A lot of what we have been building comes from listening to the businesses already using Quenta, and the businesses considering it.
One thing prospects often ask when I come in for a presentation is whether I have anyone with me. Usually, the answer is no. I still present Quenta myself.
Not because I have to, but because I want to hear the comments firsthand. I want to know which parts immediately make sense to business owners. I want to hear the questions they ask. I want to see what makes them pause, know what excites them, and understand what they still wish the system could do better.
There is so much you learn when you are sitting across the table from the people you are building for.
Yesterday was one of those meetings.
At one point, the president told me that with Quenta, "you are pushing the right buttons." He said that what we are building feels genuinely localized, something that fits the way Philippine businesses actually operate.
You are pushing the right buttons.
You can probably imagine how that felt to hear.
Because that has always been the point. I never wanted Quenta to be just another accounting system that happens to be available in the Philippines. I wanted it to feel like something that understands how businesses here really work.
Our payroll requirements. Our taxes. Our supporting documents. Our branches. Our inventory. Our regulatory requirements. Our books of accounts. The way our finance teams actually work every day.
And increasingly, the need of owners and managers to see what is happening in the business while there is still time to do something about it.
That is why the improvements we have been making are not random features being added to a system. They are coming from real conversations and real operating problems.
Do not call it affordable
Then came the part yesterday that made me laugh.
I mentioned, as I often do, that we wanted Quenta to remain affordable. He stopped me and said, in effect: "Don't call it affordable. We don't do cheap. It's a fair deal."
Point taken.
And perhaps that was a good reminder for me too. The goal is not to make Quenta cheap. The goal is to make sure that what a business gets from it is worth what it pays for.
Then, in the middle of the presentation, they handed me these. Not at the end. Not at the door on my way out. They seemed excited by what they were seeing, and it came out right there.
I have given many presentations over the years. This was the first time a client gave me something to take home, and the timing is the part I keep thinking about. It happened while they were still seeing Quenta for the first time.
But I think the bigger gift was hearing, directly from another business owner, that we may indeed be building the right thing.
That is also why, for now, I still want to be the person in the room presenting Quenta. Because every conversation teaches us something. Sometimes it becomes a better workflow. Sometimes a new feature. Sometimes it changes the way we think about the product itself.
And every now and then, a conversation simply reminds you why you started building in the first place.
Every number tells a story. So does every conversation behind Quenta.
